Today I want to share some of our favorite kids’ apps for iPad and iPhone that are wonderful for budding readers!

Reinforces phonics and sounding out letters as well as parts of words.  There are three modes – learning, practice, and testing.  Kids grab and drag the letters into spaces, and can hear the sounds and word as they’re working.  Between words they try to pop the dinosaurs in bubbles before they float to the top of the screen (fun little in-between game).

LOVE this app for learning word groups and reading practice!  There are many different ways to practice the words, then they get to read a short story.  Emma really responded well and impressed me with this one. : )

This one is good for reinforcing each letter sound and recognizing uppercase and lowercase letters.  Kids also have a chance to practice tracing and writing the letters themselves.  More for learning and practicing the basic phonics letter sounds than actually reading words.

(It might come up free again, I got the 1-300 word app for free)

This one is simple but if you’re working on recognizing sight words then it’ll be very helpful.  Kids practice writing the sight words and can record themselves saying them (or you can do the recording).  In between there are various games that reinforce them including hangman and memory.

7 Great iPad Apps for Learning to Read (Most Free!)Hop on Pop – Dr. Seuss (Book)
iPhone/iPod/iPad
Get it here for $3.99.

I am so impressed with the way they’ve put the Seuss books on iPad!  There is the option to have it read to you or not, and when you click a word or picture visual and audio words pop up.  As a digital beginning reader I recommend it!

  • Thanks! I got an iPad Mini for Christmas and have been using it in my classroom (1st and 2nd graders) and with my 1:1 tutoring students as well. I’ll check into these. For students also love ILinkWords which challenges them to find words by connecting letter tiles. Chicktionary is also fun. Both are free.

  • I need to check a few of these out!

  • Thanks for sharing these, I’ll have to see if they are on the market.

If you don’t use them already you should look up Starfall apps. Our tablets and phones are all android, but I would assume they have apple apps also. Or if not then look up the site (webesite is free, apps are not) starfall.com which is just amazing. It is a great interactive tool to help teach phonics. My oldest still loves the site and my youngest started using it this last summer. Fantastic tool.

  • Try my LessonBuzz literacy apps. They’re a whole program for K-6. I’m a teacher and I wrote it all. It really works and the children love it!
