Boutique Ribbon Hair Clip Step-By-Step Tutorial (Bow Style)

Have you ever wanted to learn to make your own hair accessories? Sometimes what you find in the stores just isnt exactly what you want or it is such poor quality that it falls apart after a week or so. Once you see how easy it is to make them yourself you wont feel the need to spend a fortune on a coordinating hair clip set for the holidays or your childs bow collection. Youll be able to make your own and have a blast doing it!

So lets get started with

The Tutorial!

Supplies needed:

  • Scissors
  • Three lengths of ribbon (specified below)
  • Glue (I like Aleenes Tacky Glue, and a glue gun for the bow is very helpful)
  • Hair clips (Can be purchased online in bulk for very good prices!)
  • A lighter or matches

Step 1: Cut three lengths of ribbon. 1 @ 4.5 inches, 1 @ 1 1/4 inches, and 1 @ 3 1/4 inches (approximately)
This is where youll want to finish each end of the ribbon by holding it above a flame. It melts a bit and therefore prevents fraying.

Step 2: Apply some glue to the underside of the top clippie bar and place the 4.5 inch ribbon ugly side against the glue. Close clippie so that it can dry.
Note that the bottom bar is the flat bar, the top curves at the handle.

(You dont have to wait for glue to dry before moving on.)

Step 3: Apply glue to the top of the clippie and fold ribbon over onto the glue. Center, then use a spare clip to hold it in place at the tip.
Thanks to Erin @ Connected2Christ for this tip! If it werent for her, Id still be trying to struggle along with the very unforgiving glue gun lol

Step 4: Apply glue at the handles and bottom of the clip and fold ribbon over, adding clips for stability as you go. Wait for it to dry (and start on another one while youre waiting!).

You can actually stop here if you like your clips plain and elegant.

OR continue with the bow!

Step 5: I use the glue gun for these parts. Apply a drop to the middle of the 3 1/4 inch ribbon and fold both ends over so that they are centered. You have to be really fast when using the glue gun so you might want to use tacky glue for more precision and use a spare clip to hold it in place while its drying.

Step 6: Apply a drop of glue to the bottom side of your bow and fold the 1 1/4 inch ribbon around the center as shown in picture below.Another drop and youre all finished!

Step 7: Glue bow to top of finished clippie and youre done!
