Coloring With Crayons on Hot Rocks = FUN! (A How-To)

I saw this activity over at Irresistible Ideas for Play-Based Learning and LOVED the idea so of course had to give it a try myself. Its basically heating rocks in an oven and then coloring on them with crayons, so easy! I wondered about the wisdom of letting my 3-year-old daughter handle extremely hot rocks, but gave it a try anyway. It just looked like so much fun!

I had Emma do it all. First we gathered rocks, looking in particular for flat ones.

We put them in the tray that came with our toaster oven and baked them at 450 for 15 minutes.

Then we took them outside and dumped them into the concrete. Outside seemed like the best place to do this activity. 🙂

The crayons glided easily over the rocks the wax in the crayons melted instantly! Emma understood very well not to touch the rocks because they were so hot. Youll want to be sure your kids understand before letting them loose on the rocks. 🙂

They turned out really pretty, dont you think? I especially love what the glitter crayon did to the rock (the purple one).

We had a lot of fun with this and think its a great summertime activity. Give it a try and let me know how you like it!

If you post pictures of your rocks somewhere, I would love it if you would leave a link in the comments here. 🙂
