Hi Ho, Silver! Remember the classic Lone Ranger shows? Back in the day, those episodes were pretty exciting and much-anticipated each week. Little boys (and girls, I’m sure) everywhere made black masks and played that they were the Lone Ranger, a cowboy who helps those in need and pretty much the most heroic cowboy who ever lived!
When I heard that Disney was making a movie based off of the old The Lone Ranger, I was very curious to see how they would do it. There ended up being quite a cast of stars – Johnny Depp (Pirates of the Caribbean) and Helena Bonham Carter (Harry Potter) being the two most notable (for me). Last night my husband and I sat down to watch it for the first time! Here’s what we thought:
The movie begins with a very old Tonto telling the true and untold story of The Lone Ranger to a young boy. We’re taken back to his younger days when he first meets John Reid (Lone Ranger). Although their friendship starts off very rocky, they team up (somewhat unwillingly) to fight a common enemy.
The Lone Ranger definitely has a quirky, humorous bent, and Johnny Depp has a lot to do with that (of course). He’s an interesting actor, isn’t he? Anyway, I thought he did a good job playing Tonto. I think I might have been bored with the movie if he hadn’t been in it, and he and John Reid have a relationship that makes you wonder if they are really friends or if they’re just putting up with each other because they have a common goal.
There is non-stop action in this movie – train wrecks, chases on horseback, explosions, and much more. If you like cowboys and action you’ll enjoy this one, though it’s often very over-dramatized and unbelievable. Still, it’s fun to watch and quite thrilling. There is also a little romance although that wasn’t too moving in my opinion.
Final Thoughts: I would watch The Lone Ranger again for the action, humor, and quirky characters, but if you’re hoping for depth of character and believability you won’t find it. I know there are a few negative reviews on the movie but I don’t think it’s a fail, it’s just a little different. It’s entertaining and was a fun date night movie, for sure – I think it’s worth watching!
And is it good for kids? I would be uncomfortable letting my daughter (5) watch it – there are scenes that take place in a brothel and at one point Red (Helena Bonham Carter) pulls the hem of her dress up slowly to reveal her tattooed leggings to an officer to distract him (it was more the way he was acting and she was encouraging it). It also has a lot of violence and drinking. You can check out this parental guide to see what exactly is in the movie if you’re concerned – it’s rated PG-13.
