Today is Fitness Friday at Wii Fit Mommiis! I joined this great group of moms (and some that aren’t moms, you don’t have to be one to join) who are all about encouraging and challenging each other through a Wii Fit fitness routine.
In case you hadn’t heard or don’t know much about Wii Fit, it’s a program for the Nintendo Wii game system that helps keep you fit and lose weight by challenging you with games/exercises in four different categories: Aerobics, Strength Training, Yoga, and Balance. I was blessed enough to receive this for Christmas (thanks, honey!) and yesterday it came in the mail! The boxes sat underneath the Christmas tree for a whole 10 minutes, too. ;-)
Of course the packages arrived TEN minutes before I had to work! I felt like a martyr having to leave it for later, but thankfully it was the second half of my split shift and I only had to work two hours. So my husband hooked it up while I was working. :-) And when I came out, we had our first experience with the Wii – Wii Sports! For about an hour and a half we played bowling, golf, tennis, baseball, and boxing, and a had a blast! It was nice to be doing something together like that. By the time we were done we were sore, too. My favorite games were Tennis and Bowling, with boxing and baseball being our least favorite. ;-) But it was fun to punch John’s Mii out. lol
Anyway, back to the Wii Fit. John was worn out but I HAD to check out my Wii Fit. So in the disc went, and for the next hour I was completely engrossed in creating (perfecting) my Mii, being assessed as to weight and BMI and making goals for weight loss, and exploring the mini games in each fitness category. Let me tell you, Wii Fit ROCKS! It’s user friendly and super fun!
So you probably want to know about my weight and goals. ;-) Or not. But I’m gonna tell you anyway, because I’m pretty sure that’s what Fitness Friday at Wii Fit Mommiis is about – making goals and staying accountable. So here goes.
I stood on the Wii balance board and watched the screen with much trepidation as the tinny little computer voice said, “Measuring! Measuring!”. I was about to find out just how overweight I was – I hadn’t even weighed myself since my daughter was born seven months ago. Thankfully my husband wasn’t in the room. ;-) Finally, the information was before me. I ended up at about middle normal weight range, amazingly enough. I really thought I was worse, but I guess I’m not hugely overweight, just weak and flabby. Yes, my body age was calculated at 35! lol I really should take that test again when I’m not tired from Wii Sports… (excuses, excuses!). ;-) When asked to set a goal on the calendar, I put down that I wanted to lose 20 pounds in two months. lol I’m not sure if that’s a good goal or not! Might lower it, give myself some slack. Is that even possible? I mean, can I still eat and lose that much?
Oh, did I mention that my husband ended up taking over the Wii Fit at some point? And he stayed on it for 40 minutes solid! This is the man who was slightly skeptical about its effectiveness… lol. I have to admit that it is a lot of fun to try to beat each other’s scores.
On with the routine!
At 5 a.m. this morning, I got up. I was so excited about starting my Wii Fit routine I could hardly sleep! I tiptoed around the house so I wouldn’t wake my daughter, who gets rather jealous. I set the balance board in front of the TV, used the Wii remote to turn the system on, and …
Of course. That child has a special sixth sense. She knows when mommy is up. So I heaved a deep sigh of resignation and went to get her and feed her. Afterward, I was able to start up and she happily sat in her walker and alternately watched me and the screen with fascination.
Ah, praise is good!
One of the really cool things about the Wii Fit is that it has a built-in calendar and tracks everything. This morning it commended me for getting up so early and exercising! I just puffed up with pride, lol. Also, I think I’m going to be a lot more careful about what I eat because I’ll know the Wii will know if I gain weight! *mock horror*
This morning I did the breathing and the first side stretch in Yoga. In Aerobics, I got really into the hula hoop game and unlocked the super hula hoop level – then I emailed my husband at work and told him I beat his score! I also did two “runs”. It’s so cool, jog in place and your little “Mii” runs through a lovely park. I watched a woman run by me and fall flat on her face, and someone passed me who was walking a bunch of little white fluffy dogs. Apparently there’s a whole island you can jog on. Pretty cool! I didn’t wear shoes, though… I’m thinking I should have. My calves are pretty sore.
In Strength Training, I only did the first exercise. In Balance, I played all the games available and it kept telling me I was unbalanced. I’m still trying to decide whether it means mentally or not… ;-) But it’s harder than I thought to keep your balance centered! There’s a game where you lean from side to side to hit soccer balls with your virtual head. That was so hard for me! But I think I’m getting better. :-)
The totally awesome thing about this program is that by the time it was time to stop, I didn’t want to stop! I was tired, but I wasn’t sick of it like you are with exercise videos, you know?
All in all, I am extremely impressed with the Wii Fit and can’t wait to get up in the morning (maybe not so early this time as tomorrow is Saturday) and do it again!
