I was first introduced to essential oils by a very good friend. She gifted me a small bottle of Peppermint Essential Oil and I was hooked as soon as the crisp, yummy scent hit me! It smells clean and fresh and sweet, and is definitely a mood lifter.
Being the nerdy girl I am, I had to Google the benefits of peppermint oil and how to use it. I found out that (to mention a few ways) you can use it to soothe headaches, to help you feel invigorated and motivated right before and during a workout, to improve your concentration, to help ease nausea, and the DoTerra Peppermint Essential Oil can even be taken internally (a drop in a glass of water or juice) for digestive problems. I couldn’t wait to try it out for myself!
What Exactly Are Essential Oils? Quick Q & A. :-)
What are essential oils?
Extracts from nature – the roots of plants, bark, etc.
What are essential oils used for and how are they used?
Essential oils can be used topically, through aromatherapy, and internally (as long as they are pure) for a myriad of different things. They’re already being used in beauty products for your skin, medicines for your health, and perfumes, too. You can diffuse them because you love the scent or use them as an alternative (or in addition to) medicine. I have a book called Modern Essentials that actually lists about 100 or more conditions and which essential oils are recommended for them (and how to use them) – it’s fascinating! Some examples are autism, hypothyroidism, depression – pretty much anything you can think of they have a suggestion on how to use oils to help in some way. Very cool and there are a lot of positive experiences, too! You can also check www.everythingessential.me for suggestions on which oils to use for what issue.
Is quality important in essential oils? Why can’t I just buy the cheapest?
Yes, quality is very important! The lowest level of quality is meant only for scent, the type used in perfumes, and the highest, “Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade”, is the highest quality you can find. Quick example of why quality is important: Peppermint essential oil can be taken internally – you can put it on your tongue to freshen your breath or add a drop to your water to soothe an upset tummy. However, not all oils are pure enough to swallow. Check on the bottle and if it doesn’t say “Safe to be taken internally” you should NOT put it in your mouth. Many of DoTerra’s essential oils and certainly their peppermint oil is safe for taking internally, and they are ALL Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade!
Peppermint & My Headache
The first opportunity I had to use my Peppermint oil was with a tension-related headache. I always feel grouchy when I have one, and am a little short of patience, then I feel bad that mommy is a grump (even if it is due to pain). :(
After doing a little research, I learned that the best way to use it the oil for a headache is to apply it straight from the bottle to my temples, forehead, and back of my neck. I immediately felt a cool sensation where the oil was on my skin and the smell was heavenly! This was distracting and soothing, but of course didn’t take the headache completely away immediately so I took some time to just relax (something I have a hard time doing with two little kids), and breathed deeply of the oil that was left on my hands after applying. The headache went away after about 15 minutes. Surprisingly I could still feel the tingling where I had applied the oils (it lasts for quite awhile!). I was pretty happy about having conquered the headache without the use of meds, and in such a positive way!
Other ways I’ve used peppermint oil in the last two months:
1. Added one drop to a tall jar of water (totally refreshing and good for heartburn or any kind of digestion issues). Just keep it to one drop or even less, that stuff is strooong! :)
2. Put a drop on my tongue to freshen breath and mouth (SERIOUS jolt of peppermint – take THAT, breath mints!)
3. Applied it to an itchy hive that popped up on my face and it took away the itchiness, AWESOME!
4. Diffused it in the air to help with concentration while writing blog posts.
5. Put some on my feet on a verrry hot night when I couldn’t sleep to help cool me off (that cool sensation, it really helps!).
It’s important to remember that essential oils aren’t miracle workers by themselves – though sometimes you might feel like they are when you’re getting relief! For any medicine to work to its fullest potential a healthy lifestyle is imperative. :)
