More new  books from one of my favorite children’s book publishers, Abrams Books for Young Readers!  I’m delighted to introduce you to two of their new releases by amazing authors:  The Legend of the Golden Snail by Graeme Base, and Otis and Sydney and the Best Birthday Ever by Laura Numeroff.

The Legend of the Golden Snail by Graeme Base
Abrams Books for Young Readers, October 2010
48 pages, hardcover
♥♥♥♥♥ (5/5)

About the Book

A young boy’s favorite storybook tells of a Golden Snail that lived long ago in the mythical Spiral Isles. When it journeyed through its magical realm, it took on the shape of a fantastical golden sailing ship. One day the ship was captured by a Great Enchanter and put under his spell. After he became bored with the Snail, the Enchanter banished it to the Ends of the Earth so no one else could ever sail in it. There it remains until a new master comes to claim it. Could a young boy named Wilbur be the next master?

My Review:

This book is a treasure.  I knew that it was special after I flipped through it, reading the story for myself – then I realized that this is the author and illustrator of Animalia, a book I absolutely loved when I was a teen.  The Legend of the Golden Snail is the sea adventure every little boy wants to brave, and now he’ll be able to through this wonderful children’s book!  The illustrations are rich and every detail is well thought out.  When you first open the book, there is a detailed map of the sea and islands, and on the next page is a little storybook within the book with its own pages to turn – beautiful!  There is also the addition of a hidden skull and crossbones in every picture in the book for the reader to find.

I am so delighted with this story and the layout of the book, and think it is a terrific gift idea for boys.  And girls, too.  :)  You can buy it from Amazon.com for $13.57 right now – it regularly retails for $19.95.

Otis and Sydney and the Best Birthday Ever
Written by Laura Numeroff
Illustrated by Dan Andreasen
Abrams Books for Young Readers, September 2010
32 pages, Hardcover
♥♥♥♥ (4/5)

About the Book…

Otis and Sydney are the best of friends. This year, Otis wants to do something special for Sydney’s birthday. So he decides to throw a surprise party and invite all their friends. He mails the invitations, decorates the house, and bakes a cake, but when things don’t go as planned, how will Otis make sure that Sydney has the best birthday ever?

My Review:

Yes, it’s another release by Laura Numeroff, the beloved author of If You Give a Mouse a Cookie – a book that my daughter brings to me over and over to read to her.  This book is just as delightful with two sweet bear characters that my daughter fell in love with.  This is a great birthday-themed book and the story is sweet!  You can purchase it from Amazon.com for $11.53 – it regularly retails for 16.95.
