Sweater to Skirt – A Refashion Tutorial You Can Use for Yourself or a Little Girl!

I love the Autumn its a time for cozy sweaters, furry boots, and warm scarves! I dont usually think of skirts in this kind of weather, but I saw a sweater skirt on Pinterest that I loved so I decided to see if I could find one in-store near me. No such luck and the only skirt that I liked was $60. That figures, right?

So what did I do? I came home, got back on Pinterest, and began searching for sweater skirt tutorials. It looked so ridiculously easy to make one that I whipped out my sewing machine, found a sweater in a bag that was going to Goodwill, and started on my own sweater skirt. Of course, I didnt take pictures of the process because I wasnt sure how it would turn out. But after I finished mine and was so happy with it, I pulled out a sweater that didnt quite fit Emma right and made her one.

So heres what you do!

Get this stuff:

Old/Thrifted sweater
Scissors
Sewing machine and all that jazz
Elastic (I used 1/2 inch)

First, cut the sweater straight across under the arms.
(I also cut off the sleeves to use later for leggings for Emma.)

Try it on to see if its the length you want. If you want it a bit shorter, you can cut it off more at the top. Keep the hemmed bottom the way it is itll look much nicer if you leave that part and dont hem it yourself (unless youre a pro at hemming!).

Turn the tube inside out and turn the top over to form a casing for your elastic waistband. Pin and sew all the way around, stopping before you sew it up completely.

Attach a safety pin to one end of the elastic and thread it through the waistband casing. Sew the ends together, then finish sewing the casing.

Youre done! Don some leggings and cute boots and youre ready.
