Teaching Myself to Sew…
Crafts & Tutorials, Fun Stuff — By Lindsey on June 27, 2010 at 9:39 pmAlthough I looove crafts and creating in general and have been sharing sewing tutorials for awhile now, I’m a beginner myself when it comes to sewing. I’ve only ever done smaller sewing projects as a teen, and I tended to let my mom do most of it. You know, all the hard stuff.
But guess what? My mom gave me her sewing machine (because she’s moving and because she loves me) and I’ve been teaching myself to sew the last few days! I’ve had a blast with it, too. I thought I might be too impatient, but I’m enjoying it so far. :)
I attended a good friend’s baby shower today and I was hoping to be able to make her some nice gifts. I made her two appliqued onesies – one with her little baby-to-be’s first initial on it and the other with a super cute tie on it. I also sewed up two burp cloths with an adorable flannel animal fabric:
All in all I was happy with what I made for my friend – something personal and useful – and am happy with my first sewing projects as well! Well, the two onesies weren’t stitched but I might take them back and stitch around the appliques for her for added stability.
Here are the FANTASTIC tutorials I followed online for each project…

I can’t wait to start another sewing project!

They’re beautiful! These are great skills to have, especially for baby gifts. I’ll bet they were your friend’s favorites, and they probably didn’t break your budget either.
She did tell me she wants one of my onesies to be the one her little boy comes home from the hospital in. :) Made me very happy I had put the extra effort out!
Fun gifts, I’ll check out the tutorials. I have a sewing machine that I’m teaching myself to sew on too. I am very much the beginner so these sound perfect! You’ll need to start working on projects like these for yourself☺

You’re so right! I have three more onesies, I’m just thinking of what I can make that can be for a boy or girl right now. Since I have awhile to wait until I know for sure. :)
I’m so proud of you!!

I have always wanted to sew. My father taught me how to thread a needle and I still do it wrong. My mother used to make my dresses and when I tried I almost lost a finger. My only artistic abilities are singing and writing, although I’d love to learn how to knit.
