The Butter Bell Crock: How Did I Ever Live Without It?

This is a Butter Bell Crock, my friends. And guess what? Your kitchen NEEDS it!

Im not exaggerating, either. I LOVE mine and am more than thrilled that I dont have to deal with yucky butter sticks getting too soft anymore!

Whats that? You say youve never even heard of a Butter Bell Crock? Well, then! Prepare to be enlightened!

How it Works

Okay, I wasnt sure about this either when I first saw it. Butter in water? Wont it get wet? But it doesnt its butter after all water slides right off. 😉 And did you know this isnt a new concept? This is actually a modern version of the original French butter crock.

Anyway, heres how to use it. I take a room temperature stick of butter and squish it all firmly into the lid of the crock (the fun part!), making sure there are no air bubbles, then place the lid on the crock, immersing the butter in the 1/3 cup of cold water in the base. This is what it looks like:

You can keep this on your dining room table and have smoothable, not-too-soft butter at your table all the time! The water keeps the butter fresh and cool you just change the water every three days. We use a lot of butter so by three days I needed to refill mine, anyway. And Im happy to say that it was super easy to wash, too. The butter just melts off with warm water and soap.

Things to Note:

  • The Butter Bell is dishwasher safe.
  • They are made of high-quality ceramic with no lead or cadmium.
  • You can use margarine, but it is oilier and doesnt stay in the lid as well as butter (and wouldnt you rather have real butter than that fake stuff?)
  • You can use the Butter Bell Crock for spreads such as cream cheese but youll have to keep it refrigerated, unlike the butter.
  • The crock holds an entire stick of butter, or 1/2 cup.
