This is a Butter Bell Crock, my friends.  And guess what?  Your kitchen NEEDS it!

I’m not exaggerating, either.  I LOVE mine and am more than thrilled that I don’t have to deal with yucky butter sticks getting too soft anymore!

What’s that?  You say you’ve never even heard of a Butter Bell Crock?  Well, then!  Prepare to be enlightened!

How it Works

Okay, I wasn’t sure about this either when I first saw it.  Butter in water? Won’t it get wet?  But it doesn’t – it’s butter after all – water slides right off.  ;-)  And did you know this isn’t a new concept?  This is actually a modern version of the original French butter crock.

Anyway, here’s how to use it.  I take a room temperature stick of butter and squish it all firmly into the lid of the crock (the fun part!), making sure there are no air bubbles, then place the lid on the crock, immersing the butter in the 1/3 cup of cold water in the base.  This is what it looks like:

You can keep this on your dining room table and have smoothable, not-too-soft butter at your table all the time!  The water keeps the butter fresh and cool – you just change the water every three days.  We use a lot of butter so by three days I needed to refill mine, anyway.  And I’m happy to say that it was super easy to wash, too.  The butter just melts off with warm water and soap.

Things to Note:

  • The Butter Bell is dishwasher safe.
  • They are made of high-quality ceramic with no lead or cadmium.
  • You can use margarine, but it is oilier and doesn’t stay in the lid as well as butter (and wouldn’t you rather have real butter than that fake stuff?)
  • You can use the Butter Bell Crock for spreads such as cream cheese but you’ll have to keep it refrigerated, unlike the butter.
  • The crock holds an entire stick of butter, or 1/2 cup.
