Tips for Teaching Your Child To Eat Healthy Foods {Looney Tunes Eating Right Kids Program}

Welcome to week two of the Looney Tunes Eating Right Kids Program! Last week I shared my personal challenges getting my toddler to eat healthy. As a reminder, over the next five weeks Ill be sharing my experiences and tips on teaching our kids to eat more healthy, and Ill be hoping for tips from you as well! When moms get together and start sharing ideas, we are unstoppable!

This weeks topic is teaching our kids to eat healthy!

My tips are pretty simple or they sound simple, at least. As Im writing this post Im snacking on dark chocolate (my weakness). Right now I can get away with it because my daughter is so young and doesnt pay too much attention to everything I do, but eventually I know shell be watching my every move. I remember as a kid knowing when my mom was sneaking candy. I dont know how I knew, I just DID. My sister was even worse, she had sugar sensors or something. She could hone in on any sugar in the house like she had built-in radar!

So the first tip (and Im so preaching to myself here!) is:

Be an example:

If you eat healthy foods and dont snack on junk food between meals, kids will follow your example. Theyre watching everything you do and everything you eat! If you eat right, youre teaching them to eat right. Dont start giving them the Do as I say, not as I do excuse, either. Show them that its worth caring for our bodies by caring for yours, and start early if you can!

Get the kids in the kitchen:

When I was a kid, my mom bought a special cookbook for kids for me. It was a Christmas present, I think. It included a set of colorful plastic measuring spoons and many fun and healthy recipes. I LOVED it and had a lot of fun trying new recipes with my moms help. For the first time I became interested in what I was eating, and preparing it myself really made it taste that much better. I definitely recommend including your kids in the preparation of food, and make it fun!

Give them the why:

You know how kids are with the why word. You tell them to eat something good for them, and they want to know why whether theyre voicing it or not. Tell them in a way they can clearly understand how the good foods help their bodies. Certain foods will give them energy for playing sports, thinking clearer (brain power), and having clearer skin and healthier hair. Heres a fun food pyramid you can show your kids:
