“We have banana ice cream EVERY NIGHT!

This is something you might hear one of my kids exclaim if you mention sweets or ice cream around them.  And you know what?  It’s true!

Now before you give me a lecture about too much sweets let me tell you that this “ice cream” consists of fruit and milk.  That’s it.  The only sweets are the sprinkles I sometimes top it with because they love it so much (how bad can a few sprinkles be for you?).


This “ice cream” that I speak of is made by putting frozen bananas, a small amount of milk, and a dash of vanilla in the blender and blending it all up into an ice cream-like consistency.  The kids LOVE it.  They think it’s as good as real ice cream!  And there are so many ways to change up the flavor a bit, too.

You can add:

  • chocolate chips
  • berries
  • coconut
  • graham crackers
  • peppermint flavoring
  • Orange or grape juice instead of milk
  • Cocoa powder

Basically any kitchen ingredient you can think of, give it a try!

The best thing about this is that I can eat it too, and guilt-free!  If you’re craving ice cream but don’t want to give in to the temptation because you’re hoping to lose weight for summer like I am, you’ll want to keep frozen bananas on hand in your freezer.

A couple things:

  • Make sure you use FROZEN bananas.  If they’re not frozen the texture is kind of slimy (think mashed banana).  Good for babies, not good for ice cream.  :)
  • Use a very small amount of milk, add more as needed.  I mean like just 1/8 cup maybe.  If you add too much it’ll turn into a shake and you’ll be drinking it through a straw rather than using a spoon.  Which is good, too – but not the same.

Now I use my blender to do this right now but it’s kind of a pain.  I have to keep turning the machine on and off, use a wooden spoon to push the bananas down closer to the blades, turn it on again, turn it off again to push the ingredients down, etc.  It may just be my blender is toast (though it does still work!), but thought you should know it’s (probably) normal to have to do that.  ;-)

  • I do this too (though not every night). I like adding Peanut Butter & Co’s Dark Chocolate Dreams peanut butter to the banana ice cream creating Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Banana Ice Cream. My kids go nuts over it. I’ve even pureed frozen bananas with the dark chocolate PB and milk to make Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Banana Milkshakes.
