Ahhhhhh…… yes, who is god to me? Geez, that is such a hard questions to answer as I am sure you know. I feel similarly to you in the sense that my idea of god seems to change the older I get. But honestly, the idea of god is not one that I have even thought about in depth enough. I am not atheist, just haven’t really thought about that much, but do in small snipits and hearing what others think about god and how they view it is very interesting to hear. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. :)

Hi Kelly! It’s such a blessing that you are able to have a close relationship with God as your father – sometimes when our earthly dads are sort of disconnected, it’s hard for us to relate. That’s a real gift from God. :-) Thanks so much for sharing, it means a lot to me!

God is definitely able to save all men, but he gave us free will – he didn’t create a world of robots. Thankfully! lol He “desires” that all men will be saved. He is ready and willing to love and accept us at all times. :-) But not everyone will be saved, as I mentioned above in the first comment reply.

Now if you have any other questions, I would be happy to answer them as best I can – feel free to reply to the email I sent you. :-)

I would also recommend that, if you have questions such as these, you ask a pastor. I can answer some questions, but pastors generally (hopefully!) do deeper studies.

Lindsey, I am so thrilled that you will be joining us as we come to know God in more real and intimate ways.

I hate that you had the experience you had in the “legalistic” church you were in. But, on the flip side of that, I’m thankful that from this experience you were drawn into God’s Word to discover for yourself who He is. When we begin digging into the Word, who God is becomes so much more personal and alive to us.

I love your list of who He is to you, especially the one about Him never forsaking His children even when we mess up. Goodness knows I’ve made my share of mistakes, but God has been patient with me through them all, loving me right back into His arms.

You are exactly right that everything we need to know about God is in the Bible, and my prayer is that through this study we all will come to know the God of the Bible more as we open up His Word and unearth new truths about who He is.

If I may… Bebe, how can the definition of love NOT be soley contained within God?

So, are you saying the definition of love is contained solely in God? I ask because when you look at passages like this:

“Beloved (he’s addressing believers), let us love one another, for love is FROM GOD; and EVERYONE WHO LOVES IS BORN OF GOD and KNOWS GOD. THe one who does not love does not know God, for God is love. (Here comes my definition of love)By THIS the love of God was manifested in us, THAT GOD SENT HIS ONLY SON into the world so that we might live THROUGH HIM. In this love, not that we loved God (because we don’t glorify Him as He deserves ever), but that He loved us and send His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.” 1 John 4:7-10

And what is sin?
“for all have sinned and(what is sin?, It’s to…)fall short of the glory of God.” Romans 3:23

Wow!

One other comment, while I enjoyed your post, be careful when you quote passages like 1 Timothy 2:3-4 and John 3:16. If God wanted “all men” to be saved, are you saying He is unable to make that happen? Not all men are saved in the world, so are you a universalist?

Hi Bebe –

I think the best definition of love is found in the bible:

1 Corinthians 13

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Love never fails.”

God is love, and He loves us the way that 1 Corinthians describes love! That’s the truest love, the love we want from other people but will never quite get because they’re human and fallible. God is our example of love. He showed the ultimate example of love when He sent His Son to die on the cross for our sins. And, when we confess our sins, “He is faithful and just to forgive us of our sins and cleanse us from ALL unrighteousness”. That’s love. He also gifts us with His Holy Spirit when we confess that we need Him and His forgiveness, so that we won’t ever be alone. He guides us in our everyday life and shows us love that we don’t even have to earn (trying to earn it is pretty pointless, believe me). :-)

Here are some verses describing His love for us:

(He knows our deepest innermost thoughts, knows and cares about every tear we cry, and even knows how many hairs are on our head!)

“You number and record my wanderings; put my tears into Your bottle–are they not in Your book?” Psalm 56:8

“Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And [yet] not one of them is forgotten or uncared for in the presence of God. But [even] the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not be struck with fear or seized with alarm; you are of greater worth than many [flocks] of sparrows.” Luke 12:6-7

“O LORD, you have searched me [thoroughly] and have known me. You know my downsitting and my uprising; You understand my thought afar off. You sift and search out my path and my lying down, and You are acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word in my tongue [still unuttered], but, behold, O Lord, You know it altogether.” Psalm 139: 1-4

Could you define love for me? Are you talking about an emotion, an action, or something else? What is love from God? Is it discipline, creation, His presence?
I’ve come to value people defining their terms because it can mean so many different things in our culture.

I’ve really begun to think of God as out of the boxes lately. He is so much more than any of us can ever imagine that it is truly mind-boggling! I’m so thankful to serve a God that really can’t be defined with human language. He is so amazing!
